Catapres (Clonidine) Short Description

Catapres is prescribed for high blood pressure. It is effective when used alone or with other high blood pressure medications. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); changes in heartbeat; inability to have sex; pounding in the chest. It does not contain all information about Catapres. Doctors also prescribe Catapres for alcohol, nicotine, or benzodiazepine (tranquilizer) withdrawal; migraine headaches; smoking cessation programs; Tourette's syndrome (tics and uncontrollable utterances); narcotic/methadone detoxification; premenstrual tension; and diabetic diarrhea. Drugs other than those listed here may also interact with clonidine or affect your condition. Catapres is to be used only by the patient for whom it is prescribed. This interaction could result in kidney damage. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. Normally, a new one is applied every 7 days to a new area of the skin. Catapres 0.1 mg--round, rose-colored tablets. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Store at room temperature below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). When stopping treatment with this medicine, any beta-blocker medicines should be stopped several days before slowly stopping this medicine. The maximum effective dose is 2.4 milligrams per day; however, this dose is not usually prescribed. If Catapres is not taken regularly, your condition may get worse.
